OnePlus 3S could quickly come as OnePlus 3 parts supply depletes

OnePlus may commit to a controversial move — ending sales of the OnePlus 3 — if a supply chain source has spoken the truth. Why might it make so many waves? Well, the phone could be due for a complete change without necassarily changing its looks.

Is OnePlus playing Apple’s limbo?

For example, we may see the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 changed for a Snapdragon 821. Instead of a full HD AMOLED screen, heavily criticized for its PenTile subixel configuration, we may see LCDs used instead — not because of the criticism, but because of low AMOLED supply.

In fact, GizmoChina‘s Chinese source says component supplies are the main reason why the move is being made. Production has ended for the Graphite color while we learned from OnePlus that it is making its Soft Gold variant available for immediate shipment, but inventory was limited in the US — they sold out quickly today.

All of this to say that the connotation of a so-called “OnePlus 3S” or “OnePlus 3 Plus” may mean that we don’t see a different look coming around the bend. But we could do with a few visuals down the road.

We’ll keep an eye out on OnePlus’s second (iterative) flagship killer of 2016 or its first of 2017.
