Our original story is below.
When you download the “OnePlus 3 Launch: The Loop” app from the Google Play Store, be prepared to wait. It’s a 623MB download. But once you get into it, you’ll learn all about the OnePlus 3, just like we did … unless you took a cheater’s peek at the specs.
Beyond the virtual reality tour, you’ll find a phone with a 7.3mm-thick aluminium unibody build much like what we’ve seen of yesteryear’s HTC in two colors, Graphite and a Soft Gold. The unique alert slider comes back with three profile stages (full, vibrate and silent) and so does a 5.5-inch full HD screen, though with branded Optic AMOLED technology.
Talking about internals, it seems that we’re sticking with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 tied with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, standard. Outside, we have a 16-megapixel main camera with “Smart Capture” technology — from refined de-noising processes to Auto HDR to snapping when the viewfinder sees a smile. No official word until later about the selfie camera.
Dash Charge technology was the big deal of the day. The 3,000mAh battery gets plugged into a special cable out of the box and can replenish up to 60 percent of its capacity in 30 minutes while maintaining decent heat dissipation — the “Dash Charge Station” in the VR experience showed off competing phones heating up to 43°C while at the wall with the OnePlus 3 at 34°C. And if there’s anything a battery can use less of, it’s extreme temperatures.
The OnePlus 3 is available right now through the The Loop VR store for $399, €399, £309, or Rs. 27,999. It’s also available starting at 3pm Eastern at oneplus.net.
In the Loop VR app, you actually tap through to a prompt where the app asks for your email. You will then get a message with a tokenized link to make your purchase through OnePlus’s site. Free shipping within two days (to 31 countries and regions) is provided and you get a 15-day “no-hassle return” policy which also covers shipping the phone back.
The Loop VR experience isn’t so much as breathtaking or comprehensive as it is making a statement about how forward-looking OnePlus is (or wants to be). But we can’t fault the company for trying.
