Nokia Lumia 910 Name Shows Up Again, But Just What Is It?

Way back at the start of 2012, we heard some rumors about a Nokia Lumia 910. At the time, the prevailing theory was that this was essentially just another 900, but one intended either for release in Europe or another US carrier while AT&T enjoyed exclusive access to the original 900. Well, that didn’t exactly work out as expected, and we’ve since seen the 900 arrive internationally while nothing’s yet popped-up on the likes of T-Mobile. After keeping a low profile for several months, the Lumia 910 is coming back to our attention now, once again raising question about just what it is.

This time, the 910 appears in the device listing for Nokia’s Remote Device Access service. Unfortunately, besides just the fact that the name appears there, we don’t get any new info on the phone. That hasn’t put a damper on speculation, though, with theories running-about that this is everything from a hardware-refreshed 900 to one of Nokia’s first Windows Phone 8 handsets.

Frankly, we’re not sure it’s either of those. The idea of a WP8 model doesn’t seem right for a phone called the 910; the numbering doesn’t suggest a major departure from existing models, especially the 900, and we can’t imagine Nokia would want to downplay the arrival of WP8. What about a slightly-tweaked 900, then, maybe with more flash storage? Now that the cat’s out of the bag on the Windows Phone 7.8 situation, it’s going to be hard enough to drum-up interest in existing WP hardware, making the introduction of new models now a risky proposition, at best.

As for T-Mobile, the rumor that the 900 would find its way to the carrier has continued to build steam since we first talked about the 910, but it’s just hard to believe at this point.

We don’t know if this is just a mistake, a typo, or a ripple from whatever caused those initial 910 rumors months ago. Until we see something a little more convincing, though, we wouldn’t get too excited about this being a new Nokia smartphone on the way.
