Nokia details Refocus app, coming to PureView Lumia phones soon

It happens to the most of us: shoot that perfect picture, say goodbye to the moment, and when you revisit the image you just snapped, oh snap, it’s out of focus. Nokia seems to have a solution ready with the Refocus feature we’ve been hearing about since Abu Dhabi. Sami Niemi, Nokia’s director of Capture & Relive software product management, explains: “Nokia Refocus captures different images over the entire focus range. What this means is that you don’t have to worry about getting your shot in focus before you take a photo. You just capture your image first and then play with focus afterwards. It’s cool!”

What that means for you is no more blurry pictures, or the ability to focus on different objects and subjects post shooting. The app will basically take a still for each focus plane allowing you to later set the focus to the desired point. That app is the Nokia Refocus app, and will be coming soon to your PureView Lumia.

“Nokia Refocus calculates and creates a depth map on the scene in front of you. When you press the camera shutter key it takes a number of photos, each at a different focus stage and produces a photo with a focus that can be adjusted whenever you feel like it”, says the official blog post. And, the Finns are adding a social twist to it: you won’t only be able to refocus on stills that are on your phone; “we want you to share those stunning shots with your friends and let them refocus the shots, too! When you share these photos on Facebook or on the web, they can do precisely that.”

The Refocus app will be available to download in the coming weeks for the Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia 925, Lumia 928, Lumia 1020, and Lumia 1520.
