Nokia Brings DLNA to Symbian with Nokia Play To

By Stephen Schenck June 3, 2011, 12:07 pm

If you've upgraded your home entertainment system in the past decade, there's a good chance that you've got one or more devices that are compatible with DLNA media sharing. The protocol allows you to access content remotely over your home network, without needing to break out A/V cables every time you want to connect devices. DLNA lets you keep videos on your PC, for instance, and stream them over WiFi to any DLNA-capable TV in the house. Of course, smartphones are eager to get in on the action, too, and many already act as DLNA mobile servers. Now you can add Nokia devices to that list, with the beta release of Nokia Play To for Symbian.

Nokia Play To supports N8, E7, C7 (AKA Astound), C6-01, and X7 smartphones. Once installed, you should be able to start viewing pictures, video, and listening to the music stored on your phone from other DLNA devices with minimal setup required. You can choose what content to watch straight from your phone, or use the app's server mode to provide access for other devices as they request files.

There are limitations you should be aware of, like the inability of Nokia Play To to view media that's stored on other DLNA servers in your home. There could also be some delays when starting video playback, especially with larger files. Still, those are minor caveats, and they should be largely outweighed by the added convenience Play To offers. You can give it a shot now over at Nokia Beta Labs.
