Google itself joins in on early new Nexus 7 sales – now available in Play Store

This morning we heard about a number of retailers turning a blind eye to the official July 30 retail launch date for the new Nexus 7, and already selling the tablet early. With reports of multiple chains getting in on this action, and both in-store sales and shipments of online orders underway, it was looking like the floodgates were truly open. Now we get even more confirmation that the new Nexus 7 simply refuses to wait any longer, and Google itself has opened sales of the tablet.

The Google Play Twitter account sent out the message about an hour ago, announcing, “Surprise! The next generation @GoogleNexus 7 is now available.”

We really can’t say what prompted this rush today – maybe Google gave the go-ahead, or is just reacting to those same reports we heard of so many stores getting a head start. Ultimately, we’re just glad to see the tablet available.

The US Google Play page for the new Nexus 7 is accepting orders for both the 16GB and 32GB WiFi versions of the tablet, noting both that orders will ship “soon,” with July 30 offered as a worst-case scenario. Shipping is free for the time being.
