Android Device Manager getting new remote admin functions

Last month, Google brought Android users some valuable remote administration tools with the launch of the Android Device Manager. Not only did it let users track their phones’ GPS data, but you could trigger the handset to ring to help you locate a particularly well-hidden phone, or even remotely wipe a device to secure it from prying eyes. Now, we’re learning of some new features Google’s adding to build upon these existing abilities.

If remotely wiping a phone sounds like too extreme a measure, ADM is getting the ability to lock your phone remotely. If you’re worried that it’s with someone who might have access to, or be able to work-out your password, you can even remotely assign a new one.

Those are both great additions, and go a long way towards making ADM a service worth referring to even when you’re just a little concerned about a misplaced phone – no sense losing all your data just because you get a tad paranoid. The only real sticking point with ADM continues to be its insistence on allowing Google access to your phone’s location data, even as it adds more and more services (like these new additions we’re sharing with you today) that have nothing at all to do with actually tracking your phone.
