Mozilla Firefox OS tablet teased for next week
Earlier this year, we learned the details on the first wave of smartphones running Mozilla’s Firefox OS. The big push should get started this summer, when we’ll first be seeing handsets running the new platform go up for sale in Europe. So far, a number of companies have shown interest from less renowned OEMs like Alcatel or ZTE to even manufacturers like Sony, providing an experimental ROM for re-purposing one of its Android models. What we haven’t heard much about has been Firefox on tablets, nor of Firefox OS hardware from Mozilla itself. All that could be about to change on June 3.
Here’s what we know for sure: Mozilla is working with Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd to release a “mobile device” running Firefox OS, and the announcement is coming June 3. If that manufacturing partner doesn’t ring a bell, it’s because we know the company much better as simply Foxconn.
The rest is a little more nebulous. According to supposed insiders, this device is specifically a tablet. While that gives us a little something to go on, we’re at a loss for specs, and considering the sort of bottom-rung hardware that’s been associated with Firefox OS thus far, we’re seriously nervous about just how well this new model might be equipped. One way or another, we should learn if this really is a tablet, and get a handle on its specs – whatever the device may be – this coming Monday.
