Motorola Defy Official Gingerbread Update Leaks?

Spring is turning out to be pretty sweet for owners of Motorola’s ruggedized Defy. Less than a month ago, they got themselves a bump up from Eclair to Froyo. Now there’s a leaked ROM available that may be an official Motorola build of Gingerbread for the Android smartphone.

While the update looks like a legit, official ROM upgrade for Defys running on Orange in the UK, there are a few odd problems that call that into question, or perhaps suggest this could be an in-development, non-final release. For instance, users have reported an inability to get the phone’s camera to function properly with this software, and it crashes when attempting to enable Android system animations.

On the plus side, even if this release is unfinished, Android developers may be able to use the code in other projects, bringing new custom ROM options to the Defy. There’s already a personal project to get CM7 on the Defy that’s come quite a long way, and this leak could help bring it all together. Considering the issues with this “official” version of Gingerbread for the Defy, you just might be better off waiting for that release, anyway. If you’re dead-set on trying it out, you can download the needed files in the XDA-Developers forum thread.
