Motorola explains why AT&T slammed the brakes on Moto X update
Earlier this month, AT&T users with the first-gen Moto X started receiving a long-overdue update, bringing Android 5.1 Lollipop to their phones. Considering how the last major update was in November, and left the phone still running KitKat, this was a major step forward,. However, something seemed to have gone wrong, and back on Monday AT&T announced that it was temporarily suspending distribution of the update. Presumably, there was something wrong with the code, but at the time no one who knew for sure seemed to be sharing any details. The update’s still not back on just yet, but we’re finally gaining some insight into why it was pulled in the first place.
As Motorola’s David Schuster shares, after updating about one-third of the carrier’s Moto X users, AT&T and Motorola became aware of a problem that caused lost contacts and issues synching with the AT&T Address Book app. Not everyone was affected – Schuster says only a small percentage – but rather than risk anyone else losing access to an important contact, the companies pulled the plug on the update.
From the sound of things, Motorola and AT&T haven’t quite gotten to the bottom of just why this is happening, but Schuster promises to keep users informed of any news as it arrives. Considering how long Moto X users have been waiting for Lollipop already, we hope it’s not very much longer before this update’s ready to get back underway.
