Motorola Moto X – After The Buzz, episode 029 (Video)

Most new device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they’re widely available, and we get to use them for a few days -or a week if we’re lucky- as we work on our review.

Then press day arrives. The embargo on media coverage lifts, and everyone posts their reviews and videos at the same time. It’s a huge frenzy, commenters go nuts, and it’s a giant explosion of frantic opinion-sharing activity.

For about … a day. And then it all goes away. Sure, there’s followup coverage as people find bugs and hidden features, but after that initial blast, not many people revisit the device to see how it feels a few months later, because everyone’s already focused on the next big deal coming down the pipe.

So let’s do something about that. Let’s see how we feel about devices when they’re not shiny and new anymore. This is After The Buzz.

The Moto X. If there’s a better contender for Biggest Sleeper Hit of Last Summer, I’ll eat my hat. The long-awaited, longer-rumored device arrived in July of 2013 with a modest spec sheet and a small set of custom-built features in tow, disappointing those looking forward to a powerhouse superphone from the then-recently-acquired Motorola. Indeed, in our Editorial Roundtable following the Moto X unveiling, I was the sole Pocketnow team member genuinely excited about the device.

That’s probably because I was, at that point, also the only team member who’d handled one. But that quickly changed. Our full review landed a week later, praising the new Motorola flagship as “the best possible Android experience at a reasonable price,” and soon other team members began weighing in on the device. By the time our custom samples arrived in the mail, we were nearly enamored of the little Moto that could, the phone that delivered not spec-sheet prowess but real-world convenience.

That was nearly six months ago, though. How has Motorola’s jewel fared since, in a world of ever-ballooning screen sizes and skyrocketing hardware specifications? Does the company’s promise of a device that solves “real-world problems” hold up under the competition’s relentless barrage? How many question-answer pairs can I present before you just hop on down to the video and click “play?” Those questions (most of them, anyway) answered below, in our Moto X review update: After The Buzz #29!
