Man… we were this close to seeing Nokia wrap-up all the loose ends surrounding its embrace of Android, with the phone we expect to launch as the Nokia X. Come Monday, that handset should take its place on stage for the world to see, but a new rumor suggest that it could be just the tip of the iceberg, and Nokia may have a pair of additional Android-based smartphones still in development.

What makes this rumor so juicy is that unlike the meager hardware expected to make up the Nokia X, these two other phones would deliver higher and higher specs, and one could even flirt with flagship-quality. The mid-level device has reportedly taken the codename Nokia XX, while the highest-end model hasn’t yet had a name attached to it (and we doubt anyone’s actually going to call it the triple-X).

The problem is, for as much as we might be tickled to see Nokia release such higher-end Androids, we’re not sure the basic concept here really rings true. If the Nokia X is supposed to be something like the next step for Nokia’s Asha phones, we’d expect any future models to stay relatively low-end. Then again, this is a brave new world for Nokia now, so maybe we shouldn’t cling so strongly to any expectations.

Until we get something to back this up, though, don’t hold your breath for some crazy high-end Nokia Android.
