Minecraft Pocket Edition Now Available On Android 2.2+ Phones

By Stephen Schenck October 8, 2011, 1:25 am

After spending some time as an Xperia Play exclusive, the Android port of popular sandbox building game Minecraft was finally due to end that period of exclusivity and become available to the rest of the Android family on Thursday, a week ago. Some last-minute bugs were discovered that put the release on-hold while developer Mojang sorted things out. Now, a little over a week later, Minecraft Pocket Edition is finally making its wide debut.

The Pocket Edition is a far cry from the complex crafting gameplay offered in Minecraft on the PC; instead, it’s more like Minecraft’s creative mode, which is more about building than either crafting or mining. With infinite access to block resources at your disposal, it’s also a lot more immediately satisfying to pick up and just start building, which becomes important when we’re talking about gaming on a mobile platform.

There’s a full $7 version of the game, along with a demo you’ll want to try out to make sure your smartphone can handle the game’s hardware demands, and see if the new on-screen touch controls are to your liking; despite relatively high PC system requirements, we were pleasantly surprised to see that the Pocket Edition ticks along quite usably on an old Motorola Droid. Check it out if you’re running Froyo or later.
