We’ve just seen the prices for Samsung’s Windows 8 slate offerings, the ATIV Smart PC and ATIV Smart PC Pro and it looks like someone over at Microsoft jumped the gun and published the official Surface prices (though the page was quickly pulled). There was a lot of speculation regarding the amount of money Microsoft is going to ask for its own tablets and now we know exactly what to expect (at least regarding the Surface — not the Pro).

So here it is: the entry-level 32GB version of the Surface (the one running Windows RT) goes for $499 sans the Touch Cover. You’ll need to add an additional $100 for the Touch Cover itself for $599 and an extra $100 for the 64GB flavor (this time including the hardware input method). Unfortunately there was no information being prematurely published regarding the Surface Pro, the slate running Windows 8.

As you can see, the price seems to match the New iPad, starting at $499 for the 16GB flavor and going all the way up to $699 for the 64GB variant. Steve Ballmer hinted towards this and he also mentioned that Microsoft will ask around the same amount of money for its own tablets like competing notebooks and ultrabooks. We will however have to wait until October 26 for official confirmation of pricing.

As a reminder, the Surface packs a 10.6-inch display with 1366 by 768 resolution and is powered by the Nvidia Tegra 3 SoC. It has two USB ports, microSD card slot alongside the microHDMI output and 26/64GB storage options.

Let us know what you think about the price. Is this enough to kill the iPad?
