No time is a good time to remove nearly 100,000 apps from your mobile apps store in Italy. The move does not help the Windows 10 Mobile app gap at all, but given that operating system simply isn’t a priority at this time, we can probably say that Microsoft is driving age ratings for apps on principle.

It has been doing so since last month and has been urging developers to take an International Age Ratings Coalition questionnaire about their apps and the content inside of them. A subsequent age rating from the IARC (or ESRB, PEGI, USK, or ClassInd, where pertinent) would be denoted in the app’s profile. On September 30, the company made age ratings mandatory for all publications on the Windows Store. Now that we’re a month into the new policy, we’re seeing where developers have or haven’t been engaged.

As reported by WindowsBlogItalia, the Italian Windows Store saw its app count drop by 90,291 apps, or 27 percent, to 239,216. And that’s comparing numbers from September 22 through October 19 — more could have been removed since then. And if you’re wondering, yes, most apps in Italy are PEGI 3+ while the second most popular age category is PEGI 12+. Oddly, PEGI 7+ and 16+ are near even with each other while 18+ takes up a fraction of one percent.

Developers with unpublished apps can republish them as long as they comply with Microsoft’s new requirements.
