Microsoft made no big fuss about its latest low-end Windows mobile entry, despite looking surprisingly “premium” for its price tag, and the Lumia 650 went on sale in Europe rather quietly too. Stateside, it’s still not available in either unlocked or carrier-subsidized form, which may well change in a matter of mere days.

“The official destination for the latest news, updates and insights from the Microsoft Lumia U.S. team” just announced on Twitter they’ll be “posting some official updates on social media later this week” regarding the metal-framed 5-incher, and that can only mean one thing.

Of course, you might still have to wait a few more weeks to actually be able to buy the Microsoft Lumia 650, though at this point, a pre-order period, even a short one, sounds like a terrible idea.

Almost guaranteed to hit AT&T prepaid daughter operator Cricket Wireless, the Snapdragon 212-powered phone could also be offered SIM, contract and network restriction-free from the Microsoft Store at around $200.

Sounds a little steep for an entry-level Windows 10 Mobile device? Perhaps, but the Lumia 550 costs $140, and it’s all made of plastic. It’s smaller, thicker and heavier too, and it can barely accommodate half the 16GB data of the Lumia 650.

Primarily aimed at business consumers on tight budgets, the 650 further features respectable 8 and 5MP cameras, as well as 4G LTE connectivity. Bottom line, the $200 MSRP feels justified, and if Cricket charges $100 with prepaid plans, it’s going to be mighty hard to turn your back on this.
