Before it eventually throws in the mobile consumer towel to focus exclusively on business and enterprise, Microsoft continues to struggle with lingering inventory of its latest (last?) wave of Lumias.
Only one thing to do, of course, namely discount the heck out of the Lumia 950, 950 XL, 650, and 550 until they get so ridiculously cheap buyers will forget just how irrelevant Windows 10 is on small screens.
After charging a measly $450 for the unlocked Lumia 950 with a full gratis year of Office 365 thrown in, and pricing the jumbo-sized XL at $500 alongside a display dock, Redmond again turned its attention to the low-end Lumia 550, which was initially sold for $140, then reduced to $120 back in March.
Now it’s only one full Benjamin, at least through June 11, in online and retail Microsoft stores in the US, unlocked and SIM-free, wholly compatible with all GSM carriers, and covered by a standard manufacturer warranty.
That’s $40 off list, mind you, and 35 bucks south of the “best” Amazon deal offered at the moment on an “international” version not eligible for a US-valid warranty.
While if you favor Android, there’s obviously plenty to choose from at $100, the Microsoft Lumia 550 is without a doubt unrivaled in the sub-$150 Windows 10 Mobile segment. It may not look great, and it’s got sub-par cameras and a laggy Snapdragon 210 processor in tow, but at least it sports 720p screen resolution, packing 1GB RAM.
