The new year is just over the horizon, and we’ve already been fielding plenty of rumors about 2016 heavyweights like the Galaxy S7 and whatever HTC ends up calling its One M9 follow-up. Not too far behind those guys, we can expect what’s next from LG, but so far we haven’t heard a heck of a lot about plans for the presumptive G5. There was early talk about a possible iris scanner, and a couple months back we heard about rumored specs like a Snapdragon 820 SoC and 20MP camera. Today we’ve finally got the chance to turn the spotlight on LG’s development efforts once again, hearing about plans to give the phone a metallic body.

A report out of South Korea claims the G5 will score a “full metal case,” expanding on the use of metal frame elements in the V10 (above). That’s not to say that the G5 will outright mirror the V10’s design, but it certainly seems like LG might not be feeling like a repeat of last year’s leather options for the G4.

The source suggests that this move may be in response to tepid G4 sales, with LG hoping to pick up some of the market share smartphone rivals with metal-clad phones have been enjoying at its expense.

We also hear about general launch plans for the G5, and the idea that LG could be looking to join Samsung and HTC with a Q1 launch of its own. The last two years have seen LG sliding its G-series announcements further and further up, from late May to late April, and it sounds like this year might push things up by another month still.up by another month still.
