Marshall “amplifies” its product portfolio with a new smartphone

Marshall Amplification is already famous for being one of the founding fathers of rock music equipment. Back in the day, the company’s amplifiers gave life most of the rock music sound we grew up with, and today we even see the company diversify its sound quality to headphones. That said, it seems amplifying sound through speakers isn’t as loud or powerful, as if the company controlled the source hardware of the audio.

Marshall has decided to extend its product portfolio to smartphones, and today it announces the Marshall London as its new flagship. Spec wise it isn’t what we’d necessarily call a flagship, as it sports a 4.7-inch 720p display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, an 8-megapixel primary camera, a 2,500 mAh battery, and all powered by Android Lollipop. Now, to be fair with Marshall, its target customers are not smartphone spec heads, but audiophiles instead. It’s got two front-firing speakers, something rather common, but it also has two audio outputs, something unique. At first we thought these two outputs would give users an option for more professional audio plugs, but instead the idea here is for two users to be able to play music at the same time, at different volume levels. There’s also an M button to take you directly to your music, in addition to Marshall headphones bundled.

The Marshall London is expected to launch in 22 countries later this year, but is currently on pre-order for 4,995 Swedish krona (roughly $590), with deliveries expected on August 21.
