Microsoft’s Lumia Denim is probably one of the most anticipated Windows Phone updates since the inception of the operating system. On its own, Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 does a good enough job at setting Microsoft’s mobile operating system on par with competition, but Lumia Denim takes a couple of steps further in differentiating Microsoft’s hardware from even other Windows Phones. The list of updates that come with Lumia Denim is quite significant, but Microsoft felt the camera enhancements alone were important enough to give us a tour during our stay in Las Vegas for CES 2015.
Our initial impressions at the Microsoft demo were so positive, that we decided to take a Lumia 930 on an extensive test drive and share the experience with you all in a full video. In a nutshell, the Lumia Denim camera updates consist in:
Speed: You’ll notice that starting the camera, acquiring focus and taking an initial shot happens at the same speed as on devices like the HTC One M8 and iPhone 6.
Lumia Moments: The device is capable of filming 4K video, but for people like me this is still a gimmick since I don’t own a 4K TV. Microsoft has re-imagined 4K video and made it useful for those times where you want to grab a good shot of something that’s on the move, like say a pet for example. Most mobile cameras struggle with this, so the Lumia 930 will allow you to film a 4K video, and later access specific frames of this video as images that result in 8.3 megapixels in resolution. You also have options to edit that same video with Motion Capture options as well.
Rich Capture: This is probably the hottest feature. With the feature active, the Lumia takes a couple of photos in the same amount of time it would take a regular shot, and without delaying the time it’ll take you to continue shooting photos. You can later go back to these photos and edit the results through a couple of simple options. When not using a flash, you can either select the natural photo, the photo with HDR, or manually select how much high dynamic range you want to apply manually. The same happens when you use a flash, were you can select the low-light photo, the photo with a flash, or apply flash lighting manually with a slider.
Watch our full video with our impressions after a full week of using Lumia Denim on the Lumia 930. We will cover the rest of the Lumia Denim features on our Lumia 930 After The Buzz coming very soon. Make sure you share your thoughts and impressions in the comments. Disclaimer: Even though the video shows the back of a Lumia Icon, this is really a Lumia 930 with a replaced back. It’s a neat little trick we might show you on a future video.
