What the heck does Microsoft intend to call its next Lumia smartphones? We’ve been looking forward to a couple new flagship models for … well, entirely too long now, and now it appears that the phones codenamed Cityman and Talkman are finally nearly ready to arrive. And while there doesn’t seem to be much doubt that we’re about to see this pair launch, the situation’s been far less clear concerning just how the two are likely to be named. While Microsoft still hasn’t made anything official, one high-profile source is now committing to the idea that the manufacturer intends to release these phones as its new Lumia 950 models.
We first started talking about these guys as the Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL, a logical enough conclusion given how we’re coming off a whole series of Lumia 920 models, followed in spring 2014 by the Lumia 930. But more recently we picked up on the theory that Cityman and Talkman would instead arrive as the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, skipping the 940 series entirely. And while we’ve been leaning more in this 950 direction when most recently reporting on these phones, there hasn’t been a ton of confidence in just how Microsoft might launch them.
Our old friend Evan Blass has been the source of some of the best Cityman and Talkman leaks to date, including those great renders we got to check out last week. And while he’s not saying just what evidence he’s come across, today on Twitter Blass reports that he’s be able to confirm that these phones will launch as Lumia 950 devices.
Last we heard, Microsoft may be planning to announce its new Lumia phones at an event in mid October.
