LG trademarks hint at tablets, smartwatches

Every once in a while, we’ll learn about some rumored hardware not through any of the normal leak channels, nor by way of analyst speculation, but thanks to the companies behind these products themselves, as they file in advance for trademark protection on certain names. Now, a large number of such trademarks may never see the light of day, but every once in a while, we spot one that ends up evolving into a commercial product. Today we’ve got a couple new ones for LG, and if any of these actually make it through development, we could be looking at the company evolving into some new markets.

LG has filed for trademarks in South Korea for the GPad, G Watch, G Glass, G Link, G Band, and G Hub. Some of those might be software – Link and Hub, in particular, sound like they could be tied to sharing features. But others definitely have us thinking about new hardware.

We heard back in May that LG could be thinking of returning to the tablet market, and with its new G-series branding, a GPad tablet could make sense. G Watch has us wondering if LG is considering dipping its toe in the smartwatch pool, and that G Band could be a part of the same project. As for G Glass, a Google Glass knock-off might be the best fit for the name, but that would be an incredibly ambitious project for LG to bite off.
