Samsung’s big Galaxy S 4 launch was a thing to behold, with multiple venues and one of the largest casts we’ve seen to date. That also makes it a seriously tough act to follow, and as such there’s been a bit of a lull in smartphone press events in the weeks that followed. Now it looks like LG is ready to step up and try and capture the attention of smartphone fans for itself, sending out a save-the-date for a May 1 New York event.

Just what will LG have to share with us in two weeks? Well, we don’t know of any big, new hardware on the horizon – the Optimus G II isn’t expected for another four months or so.

What we could get is news of a national launch – specifically, for the Optimus G Pro. The Note-sized phablet is a new direction for LG, which may have learned its lessons from the poorly-received Vu, its first stab down that alley.

We just brought you a review of the Optimus G Pro, but at the time we were basing our opinions on the Korean version of the handset; it has yet to make its formal US debut. With this timing, we feel it’s highly likely that we’ll get news of US G Pro availability at this May 1 event.

Generally, we enjoyed the G Pro, and though we had some concerns with build quality and bloat, it’s a solid phone with a nice screen. Are any of you looking forward to its retail availability?
