How not to market a smartphone: LG G2 PR stunt injures 20

No matter how great a smartphone is – how superior the hardware, how intuitive the software – marketing can make or break a phone’s launch. While it’s far from a hard-and-fast truth, companies like Samsung sure have demonstrated that the more money you can throw at a phone, the more likely that model is to be a success. LG is really trying to raise its stature with the G2, and it’s wisely decided that it’s going to need some high-profile promotion in order to do so. While the basic idea may be sound, LG hasn’t exactly been going about it in the smartest manner, and at one recent event in South Korea twenty-some participants have ended up injured as a result.

The premise was simple enough: hide certificates for G2 handsets in a number of balloons, and encourage the public to find them. Problem was, LG didn’t have adequate security staff on hand to ensure things went smoothly, and the combination of the over-eager crowd and a number participants reportedly using BB guns to pop balloons from a distance contributed to upwards of twenty people being injured.

In light of this incident, LG has canceled similar events in other cities. Maybe stick to the billboards and TV ads, huh?
