Joe Belfiore to take some time off from Microsoft (but he’ll be back next year)

When we’re talking about the people who have helped shape Microsoft’s smartphone efforts into their current form, first with Windows Phone and now with Windows 10, there’s arguably no one as high-profile as Microsoft VP Joe Belfiore. He’s led countless media events, introducing us to more devices and new features than we know what to do with. But for the next few months, at least, Windows fans are going to have to get used to a Microsoft without Belfiore’s reliable presence, as he shares word this week of plans to take a break from his duties.

Starting in November, Belfiore’s taking a leave of absence from Microsoft, spending some time with his family and seeing the sights of the US. Then in January the next stage of his journey begins, as with wife and kids in tow, he sets sail for a semester at sea, joining hundreds of college students and faculty members on an educational cruise around the world.

While Microsoft will have to keep up without Belfiore’s presence for the next several months, he will be back eventually, and informs us he’ll be right back in his current role next summer. We’ll miss hearing from Belfiore until then, but this should still prove to be an exciting time for Microsoft and its mobile lineup, especially as we get ready to meet more and more Windows 10 Mobile handsets in the new year.
