Apple iWatch screen size and launch timing details allegedly revealed

By Rithvik Rao June 19, 2014, 5:53 pm

Rumors of an upcoming Apple iWatch have been piling up for months, and it seems 2014 may just be the year (if recent reports are to be believed). Today, we’re learning of even more details of this upcoming wearable to add on to what we’ve already heard about — the device’s screen size and launch timeframe have allegedly been exposed, among other details.

According to sources of Reuters, Apple is looking to ship 50 million iWatch units within the first year of it being sold. No other wearable has hit this mark quite yet, but because of Apple’s brand recognition, this could be a possibility.

Apple is allegedly turning to the Taiwanese Quanta Computer Inc. to manufacture the wearable, and mass production is reportedly set to begin this July. The watch itself will apparently have a 2.5-inch rectangular display, with the watch face “[protruding] slightly from the band, creating an arched shape.” It will have a touch interface (which has been expected the entire time), and will support wireless charging, being the first device out of Apple to feature this.

As rumored earlier, fitness will also be a focus of the watch. LG will allegedly provide the display for the iWatch, at least initially (for the first batch).

This report also states that the watch will launch as early as October, which lines up with information from two other credible sources. While this all checks out, it’s still entirely possible that any of these iWatch details could be inaccurate. We don’t even know if “iWatch” will be the final name at this point in time, but something definitely looks to be brewing.
