More OLEDs for 2018 iPhone as Japan Display aims to start production

We know that Sharp does a very, very mean LCD. But we’ve also been talking about Apple’s edging away from those liquid crystals and more towards those organic light-emitting diodes. Samsung may be making some panels for a future iPhone. Japan Display says it will soon start making them, full stop.

Its OLED production will ramp up during 2018 as it chases LG Display. That company’s in the process of starting its own OLED factories. Sharp, LG Display, Japan Display and Samsung have all supplied LCD screens for iPhones.

To tie Sharp into this story: Japan Display’s biggest shareholder, a state fund, has plans to invest in Sharp and merge the two companies.
