When you buy a phone, mission one for the thing is to communicate. And with new features tacked onto the calls side and the iMessage side, we have plenty of communication going on.

New APIs for the call experience on iOS 10 can integrate plenty of neat-o features like voicemail transcription and enhanced identification of spam calls with third-party extensions (like through Tencent). If you have an iPhone for work, you can also route your personal iPhone calls through that work device.

Messages got a whole bunch of enhancements, starting with rich links that implements in-line video play.

Craig Federighi naughtily points out that when you pull up pictures to send, you can also see a live feed of your selfie camera and find out what’s … cookin’. Ahem.

Bubble effects can animate “loud,” “quiet” or, with Invisible Ink obscuring text or images, “special” texts and multimedia. Recipients can swipe over the text to reveal the content. Full-screen effects can blow up your conversation background with fireworks and flashy stuff.

Emoji get bloated up to three times in size. Predictions will also list emoji as well. You can also “Emojify” your text messages by pressing the Emoji button and tap on highlighted words to change them.

Handwritten messages are also supported with watchOS’s Digital Touch enhancing the experience.

iMessage Apps will fold developers into the mix to get new stickers in, sophisticated live camera effects, peer-to-peer payments, take-out reservations, etc.

iOS 10 will get to developers today, a public beta will be released in July and, of course, there’s a final fall release, too.
