Fresh iPhone 7 concept renders offer peek at brave headphone-jack-less future

Rumors about Apple big design change for the iPhone 7 are basically being treated as gospel at this point: if you aren’t on board with the idea of the smartphone dropping its old-fashioned analog headphone jack, you’ve got about seven months to come to terms with your delusions. Heck, we’ve even moved past the point where we’re talking about whether or not the headphone jack is going bye-bye and we’re already talking about what Apple’s likely to do with the space freed up by that departing component. Now we’ve got a new set of renders to go along with all that speculation, as designer Arthur Reis constructs some beautiful 3D images that wonder just what this next iPhone might look like.

Sure enough, just like that analyst report suggested, Reis sees Apple doubling-up on speakers in the absence of the old jack.

Beyond that, though, this iPhone 7 mock-up is heavily rooted in Apple’s existing design language, and if the manufacturer really does go this route, we’re once again looking at an iPhone that does little to make itself stand out from the previous generation – aesthetically, at least.

Things get a little more interesting when we set these renders to motion, and Reis’s accompanying video also shows the iPhone 7 doing a little wireless charging action (with one giant charging pad) and picking up a pair of wireless “AirPods” earbuds – an idea that’s been bouncing around for long enough, but with varying degrees of support. The tiny pair depicted here almost look ready to be lost, but an imagined magnetic connection system could help you keep both of them together – or just you that much more likely to lose both at the same time.

This is the second iPhone 7 mockup we’ve seen that’s suggested largely conservative design changes. Has Apple finally honed the phone’s layout to the point where change really isn’t needed? We’ve got a long road to go between now and when this handset will actually launch, which means plenty of time for our assumptions to be challenged.
