Ever since the beginning of smartphone concepts, we’ve dreamed of the idea of a smartphone without bezels. Ever since the rumors of the iPhone 5s, we’ve also heard of the possibility of a display that could detect your fingerprint all around as well. Now what’s even more interesting is to see rumors of both technologies coming together, and in the next flagships of two competing companies.

Reports have both the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S 5 including a bezel-free display that also doubles as a fingerprint scanner. We have heard of Apple working on giving us two larger iPhones this year, and to be able to do that while keeping one-handed usability possible, a bezel-free display does make sense.

Regarding the fingerprint-scanning display, the source states that: “The finger-scanning technology will be available on the bottom left and right sides, and not the entire display,” and also that “Scanning fingerprints on the entire screen, which was much talked about recently, will be available in the latter half of this year as there are still technological hurdles to overcome,” plus the added bonus that “With the help of increased sensitivity on the panel, users will be able to swipe and tap on the screen with their gloves on.”

All this said, it’s hard to see the Galaxy S 5 including these features, and mainly because the phone is rumored to be announced in less than two weeks. If Samsung is able to nail this, then we’ll have to praise the company for its incredible level of secrecy with this launch. Apple will have the added advantage of having more time for an iPhone launch, though that could prove to be a disadvantage as well.
