iPad mini and Galaxy S 4 top insurer’s list of gadgets easiest to break

At Pocketnow we’ve developed a certain level of fame for our Durability Report series. We test a smartphone or tablet beyond its review period and tell you what things you should care for most if you want it to last your two-year contract. We do avoid intentional drop-tests, but that doesn’t mean that insurance companies do, and you’d be surprised at the results of one company’s tests.

European insurer SquareTrade recently decided to test the most breakable gadgets in the mobile industry. Its tests weren’t scientific, but then again, it’s not like if the drop tests or submersion tests that this company practiced require any science to be effective in real-world use. Out of a list of ten the results are as follow, with those easiest to break at the top of the list, and followed by their respective scores.

  1. iPad mini — 7.5
  2. Samsung Galaxy S 4 — 7
  3. iPad Air — 6.5
  4. Samsung Galaxy S III — 6.5
  5. iPhone 5c — 6
  6. Nexus 7 (2012) — 6
  7. Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 — 5.5
  8. iPhone 5s — 5.5
  9. Nexus 7 (2013) — 5
  10. Moto X — 4.5

According to the company’s statement: “We are all investing in more and more technology, so when we do we want to make sure that we are going to get our money’s worth. By putting devices through tests that replicate real life situations, we want to help people make smart choices when it comes to choosing gadgets.”-Kevin Gillan, managing director, SquareTrade Europe

Just remember, your millage may vary as we’ve seen very durable devices break after falling on a specific angle, so just keep this in mind while using even the devices at the bottom of the list.
