Yesterday morning – right around this same time, in fact – we brought you a hands-on image of the new iPad mini 2, with the photographer being so kind as to bring along a caliper and give us some physical confirmation of the tablet’s thickness. For the iPad mini 2, that was especially useful, as it gave us a little bit of insight into the rumors that the tablet might not get the Retina-quality display, as so widely believed. We don’t have anything else to help us with that question today, but it looks like that same source has been up to some more tricks, and now provides a similar measurement of the iPad 5.

You might remember that an apparent iPad 5 was in the background of that iPad mini 2 pic, a shot that once again seemed to confirm the presence of a Touch ID fingerprint scanner embedded in the redesigned home button.

What we see is some serious slimming-down compared to the iPad 4, dropping from that 9.4mm to just 7.35mm – a 20% reduction in thickness. That’s not enough to make the iPad 5 the thinnest tablet around, but being in the 7mm group, it’s definitely looking to be ahead of much of the pack.
