Apple acquisition stirring up pot of 3D sensor rumors

We’ve been talking quite a bit lately about smartphones being able to sense off-device gestures, using cameras or other sensors to detect hand position in mid-air, and offering the possibility of quite elaborate gesture-based control. Amazon might be doing it, and Nokia could be working on its own tech, as well. Now we’re wondering if Apple might like a seat at that table, upon getting word that it’s about to finalize its acquisition of PrimeSense.

PrimeSense makes 3D sensors and was the company Microsoft turned to when building the first Kinect. A lot of the discussion of Apple’s interest in PrimeSense has been in the context of a forthcoming Apple HDTV, but we’re curious about the implications for the company’s mobile hardware.

Maybe even not so much for the iPhone, but a Kinect-style 3D sensor might make a lot of sense on an iPad. The larger body would allow a lot more freedom for fitting in the hardware, and we imagine that the user experience such a system could offer would be a lot better fit for a physically larger display.

For the moment, though, this is mostly speculation, and there’s far from any guarantee that PrimeSense’s stuff will end up on a iPhone or iPad.
