The big news for iOS this week is the arrival of the first jailbreak for the iPhone 5, in the form of evasi0n. The untethered jailbreak lets any iOS user, regardless of which model they’re using, open up their phones or tablets to a new world of customization; we’ve already shown you a few cool things you can do once you install the hack. While it’s only been available for a few days, evasi0n is already proving to be wildly successful, with reports of its installation on nearly seven million iOS devices.

According to Cydia stats, evasi0n has been installed on 5.15 million iPhones, 1.35 million iPads, and 400,000 iPod touches. While Cydia’s Jay Freeman didn’t have precise figures to compare against for releases of older jailbreaks, his qualitative assessment, having witnessed this traffic first-hand, is that there’s been “insanely more” usage of evasi0n compared to the sort of activity he’s seen in the past.

Granted, seven million is still just a drop in the barrel compared to the hundreds of millions of iOS devices out there, but make no mistake, a serious number of iOS users are still very much interested in getting a little bit more out of their hardware than Apple would care to allow.
