iOS 9 Transit Maps may only work in a few cities at launch

Apple Maps is not only one of Cupertino’s most recent flops, but also one that was bad enough to get high level executives fired. As such we’ve seen the company work hard on getting its mapping services on par with existing competitors, and even then we see Apple Maps lag significantly behind services like Google Maps. We do know that Apple is planning to fix things up a little with iOS 9, and transit maps is what we hear most.

Trusted sources claim that while Apple might launch Apple Maps transit services with iOS 9, these won’t be ready for prime time at launch. It seems that only a handful of cities will be supported at the beginning, even though a list of follow-ups is already being mentioned. San Francisco and New York are rumored to be the launch cities in the US, Toronto may be the Canada city, and we also hear of London, Paris and Berlin for Europe. China is also rumored to have a few cities at launch, but under Apple’s current partnership with AutoNavi, as it seems there’s a permit issue there.

The next cities to get the service are rumored to be Boston in the US and Tokyo in Japan, though it seems the Japanese offering will take longer than Boston. Those of you wondering about Los Angeles, well it seems that is low on Apple’s priority list for reasons we can’t explain. We don’t know when these new cities will make the cut, but we do hear that the service is dynamic enough to not require an iOS update in order to add new cities, which is a good thing. We should learn more about dates at WWDC 2015.
