There are a lot of numbers in that headline, many of which need context and perspective to mean something, but as always, the bottom line is Apple knows how to rapidly and widely spread a major new software update like no other.
It’s the advantage of building iPhones and iPads in-house from the ground up, not partnering with third-party OEMs, and taking away the privilege of proprietary optimization, i.e. custom bloat, from carriers.
Despite a hiccup “during the first hour of availability” threatening the smooth expansion of iOS 10, everything ultimately went according to plan on Tuesday, September 13, with the revised platform impressively managing to reach 14.53 percent adoption after just one day of public, non-beta migrations from builds 9 and earlier.
That’s up slightly from the 24-hour share of 12.42 percent for iOS 9 a year ago, and the gap between the two’s adoption rates is expected to widen before long. Business analytics service Mixpanel estimates iOS 10 is currently increasing at a staggering pace of approximately 4.41 percent per hour, thus most likely needing only 11 days instead of iOS 9’s 12 to top 50 percent share, “even with some predicted post-launch slowing.”
In other words, if iOS 10 keeps it up (and we don’t see what could prevent a constant growth), half of its users will have abandoned older variants by next Sunday, September 25. Meanwhile, and we know this is an apples to oranges comparison, the majority of Android devices still run the 2014-released Lollipop.
