Being a successful smartphone company means growth. Shareholders aren’t content to see the same revenues year-in and year-out, and demand the active pursuit of higher and higher profits. Even for some of the biggest companies in the field, though, sustained growth isn’t always a sure thing, and manufacturers need to remain spry as they look to keep ahead of market trends. We’ve recently looked at some of the ongoing efforts such firms have been making in India, as they position their products and services to best appeal to the country’s shoppers. There’s good reason why they’re after that market, as India’s mobile user base passes an important milestone.

For the first time ever, India has one billion active mobile phone users.

That makes it the second nation to amass such a user base, following China in 2012.

Even if companies like Apple find themselves cutting prices in order to stay competitive in India, the sheer size of the market helps mitigate any cut to per-device profits; if you can sell a hundred million handsets, you’re going to make mint even if you’re profiting a few dollars less on each sale.

Admittedly, these numbers are looking at mobile users in general, and not specifically those shopping for smartphones, but as manufacturers find themselves more and more able to offer full-featured devices at bargain-basement prices, it’s inevitable that users will find themselves migrating to more capable handsets. It’s no surprise, then, that the budget market is as big a focus in India as it is. And now with a billion users to sell to, expect manufacturer interest to only grow.
