You may have thought Huawei overestimated its growth potential when forecasting 100 million smartphone unit shipments this year several months back, seeing as how the Chinese giant already posted a remarkable 75M score for 2014.

But as it turns out, the world’s third largest handheld manufacturer had no problem joining the exclusive 100 million sales club, with the ambitious target officially reached as of December 18. Last-minute holiday shopping is still in full swing, and the Nexus 6P has recently seen its first ever Google Store discount, so 2015’s final couple of weeks could well up the total close to 110M.

Next year should mark a proper and long overdue US expansion of products currently restricted to Asian and European shores, starting with the Mate 8 and Honor 5X at CES in January. If Google will seek Huawei’s services for another vanilla Android phablet, this time powered by a Snapdragon 820 processor, and in-house Kirin chips catch on at last, the sky might become the limit for the company’s further surge of both smartphone sales and overall profits.

Right now, Huawei’s execs must be celebrating a stronger and stronger position on the global OEM podium, behind only Samsung, which feels untouchable, and Apple, whose number two seat is seriously shaking. Well, not yet, but soon, if the rising Chinese star continues to impress on several fronts, and Cupertino remains faithful to a strategy calling for just two iPhone releases a year.
