Our expectations for Huawei’s pre-IFA product announcement event on Thursday probably need to be taken down a notch or two for them to still be “defied”, with the Nova series likely to fly solo to the capital city of Germany after all.

Granted, it was a bit of a stretch to anticipate a (very) early September Mate 9 launch, considering the Mate 8, which continues to sell like hotcakes in the OEM’s homeland of China, barely saw daylight last November.

A Huawei Mate S2, meanwhile, was always a safe IFA 2016 bet, seeing as how its prequel got unveiled at the same trade fair the year before, but ultimately, one of the increasingly successful company’s head honchos just let the cat out of the bag.

No new Mate releases until a couple of months down the line, with yet another mid-range smartphone family instead looking to capture the Berlin spotlight. We’re not 100 percent certain this is called Nova, and it’ll also be interesting to see if it indeed entirely caters to the ladies. Probably not, though, and hopefully, Huawei has more planned for September 1. A second-gen Watch, perhaps.
