HTC Vive “Direct Mode” allows for GPU to drive images to both monitor and headset

By Jules Wang February 9, 2016, 9:02 pm

In addition to bugfixes and UI enhancements, HTC Vive Pre owners are getting a major feature update to their SteamVR betas. In addition to the Chaperone Mode we got to try out at CES this year, there’s now Direct Mode where the driving computer’s GPU to work with the Vive headset and deliver images separately to both the monitor and the headset.

Direct Mode also has a standby that can ease up on energy use and possibly keep the Vive usable for a longer period.

The Vive Pre has it now with beta version 1451970580. All Vives will have Direct Mode starting from the next update.
