New HTC One (M8) will be slightly more powerful in Asia

Smartphone fans in Southeast Asia seem to have it pretty good: not only do they get access to dozens upon dozens of models not otherwise released in the West, but often they’ll end up with enhanced versions of the smartphones we get over here. Look no further than last year’s Galaxy S 4, which after showing up in the US with its Snapdragon 600 SoC, became available in South Korea with a Snapdragon 800, poised to tackle new LTE-A networks. As it turns out, the new HTC One (M8) is no exception to this phenomenon, and the phone as it will arrive in Asia will run a slightly better SoC than the version of the phone we saw launch in New York City yesterday.

Both versions of the new One run Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801, but while some of those chips will be MSM8974AC components, others will be the MSM8974AB. The US/EU version is the AB, which runs at 2.3GHz. Asian nations will get the AC variant, running at 2.5GHz.

Does 200MHz matter when we’re up at this lofty performance level already? That depends on whom you ask. Synthetic benchmarks say “yes,” but we all know how those can fail to reflect real-world performance gains. Perhaps it’s a moot point, since you’re not going to import a new One from China in the misguided hopes of getting it running on Verizon in the first place.

But man, HTC, why couldn’t they all just run the 2.5GHz chip?
