HTC expatriates reveal plans for new smartphone company: Kazam

By Stephen Schenck June 18, 2013, 1:00 pm

There have been a couple reports in recent months of HTC dealing with a wave of prominent executives breaking their ties with the company. As HTC works out its HR issues internally, we were left wondering what would be come of all those employees who walked away. As it turns out, at least two of them think that they have the know-how to play the smartphone game for themselves, and have announced the launch of their new company Kazam (image unrelated), which will develop smartphones for the European market.

We often talk about how the key to smartphones sales has really become promotion, and Kazam might just have what it takes to do that well – well the know-how, if not the budget. After all, its founders are a former head of sales and a UK marketing exec. We also get the sense that there could be a pronounced focus on services or software, especially when it comes to updates – one of the founders described the goal of “a truly positive mobile experience that doesn’t just stop once you’ve bought the phone.”

Android hasn’t been specifically named as the platform Kazam will target, but that’s easily the most likely direction for the company to head.

Of course, Kazam has a seriously long road ahead of it before it will be competing anywhere close to the level of an HTC. There’s a lot that could go wrong, and these early days can be some of the toughest for an upstart like this, but who knows – maybe Kazam will really have what it takes to become a major player in a few years.
