HTC Jewel Tipped as Among First Sprint LTE Phones

Now that AT&T’s lined up to get the just-revealed One X, and T-Mobile’s taken claim to the One S (with Verizon always fed a steady stream of quality hardware), HTC’s plans for Sprint seem to be up in the air, especially with the once cutting-edge EVO 3D closing in on its one-year launch anniversary. Well we’ve now learned from a trusted source that a high-end handset is in fact on its way to Sprint from the House of One, and it’s codenamed the HTC Jewel.

Details of the Jewel are still very thin, but we do know that its a large device with a high definition display akin to the One X — however since the X is reportedly exclusive to AT&T in the US, it should be a distinct piece of hardware. Also revealed was the fact that Jewel will be one of Sprint’s premiere LTE-capable handsets; this makes a lot of sense considering that the EVO 4G singlehandedly brought WiMax and a new era of wireless broadband to the US. We wouldn’t be surprised, then, to learn that Sprint and HTC decide to call this one the EVO LTE (perhaps with HD tucked in there somewhere) — that’s purely speculation, mind you.

No timeframe on a launch or release window was known, either, but with the EVO 3D having been announced at last year’s spring CTIA event in March, and Sprint having been relatively quiet at MWC so far, we could see a similar situation occurring. Then again, Samsung eschewed back-to-back MWCs for Galaxy S debuts, so you never really know until the invites go out.
