The “double” in today’s HTC “double exposure” event means that the new RE camera isn’t arriving alone, and alongside that new cross-platform camera accessory, the manufacturer brought a new smartphone to share with the world, confirming weeks of rumors about a handset with unparalleled front-facing camera performance: the HTC Desire EYE.
The leaked renders we’ve seen were right on the money, and sure enough, the EYE has one of the biggest front-facers we’ve ever observed on a smartphone, including not just a 13MP auto-focus camera, but also a dual-LED flash. You’ll find a similar 13MP setup around back, only with a slightly larger aperture.
Despite this being a Desire model, the specs are nothing to complain about, with the Eye powered by a Snapdragon 801, and packing 2GB of RAM, a 2400mAh battery, and 16GB internal storage (with the option for microSD expansion). You’ll have to look close to see them, but HTC’s famous BoomSound stereo front-facing speakers make a return; gone are the large, eye-catching grilles, replaced by much more low-key speaker openings immediately adjacent to the top and bottom edges of the display.
As is befitting a phone with cameras like these, HTC’s given the Desire EYE a hardware shutter button. The phone’s also designed with resistance to the elements in mind, offering protection against water, and comes in a couple eye-catching two-tone designs: the white/orange “coral reed” and bluish “blue lagoon.” While we don’t have a release date just yet, HTC has revealed that AT&T will be the exclusive home of the Desire EYE when it arrives.
