The HTC One is still the company’s flagship, but that hasn’t stopped us from hearing rumors about a new Butterfly under development. The first Butterfly model (above), you’ll recall, was the first 1080p smartphone and eventually came to the US as the Droid DNA. Back in March we learned that HTC wanted to develop a Butterfly sequel, and later we saw some possible evidence of such a thing, with signs of a model DLXPLUS in testing. Now a rumor is attempting to reveal just when the new Butterfly’s launch might take place, and it could be sooner than we were expecting.

The next Butterfly could arrive as the Butterfly S, and might launch sometime late this month. As for its hardware, it’s sounding less like a full-on sequel and more like a refresh of the original Butterfly. That means giving the phone one of HTC’s new UltraPixel cameras, bumping up its battery a little, and probably giving it a new SoC. We’ve heard a Snapdragon 600 mentioned before, and while the idea of an 800 is also being tossed around, we’re not sure the chip’s availability quite lines up with these rumors.

Overall, we’re finding it difficult to get very excited about the Butterfly S; especially with rumors of a high-end phablet from HTC, does it really need another five-incher?
