Windows 10 Mobile needs a hero: a phone that makes you scream, “to hell with this Android biz; Microsoft, take my money!” After the lackluster reception Microsoft’s own Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL got last year, we’ve been eager to identify a handset that might actually be able to get users excited about the company’s latest mobile platform. Will it take a third-party manufacturer to step up and deliver? Following rumors that had been bouncing around since December, HP finally made the handset codenamed Falcon official this week at MWC 2016 as the Elite x3 – and of course, we had to to take a look.

On paper, the HP Elite x3 hits all the bullet points you’d expect from a Windows 10 Mobile heavyweight: top-of-the-line Snapdragon 820 SoC, tons of RAM, Continuum dock – what’s more to want? Heck, there’s even fingerprint scanning (or there will be soon), Windows Hello iris security, and a giant 4150mAh battery.

If this phone is sounding too good to be true, that’s because there may be some truth to that – at least if you’re an average-Joe smartphone user, as HP is positioning the Elite x3 for enterprise use. That’s not to say you won’t be able to pick it up anywhere, but it may be harder than most to track down – let alone get a good deal on. For the moment, though, we’re trying not to get too hung up on that, and are content to enjoy the HP Elite x3 for what it is:
