Back in June we saw Huawei introduce its Honor 6, a five-inch Android with some pretty flagship-level specs, including 3GB of RAM and that new Kirin 920 SoC. But you don’t get to be the number-three smartphone seller around by sitting back and letting good enough be good enough, and now Huawei’s already back with a follow-up, introducing the slightly larger Honor 6 Plus.

We move from 5.0 up to 5.5 inches for the 6 Plus, while keeping the same 1080p display resolution. The SoC upgrades to a Kirin 925, ready to support high-speed LTE Cat 6 networks, and the 3GB of RAM returns. There’s 32GB of internal storage, ready to be expanded with a microSD card. Infrared support, NFC, a big 3600mAh battery, and optional dual SIM slots round-out the specs.

Well, there is one more area to address, and it’s a pretty interesting one: the Honor 6 Plus’s cameras. The five-megapixel front-facer is an Honor 6 hold-over, but it’s around back where the real magic happens: the Honor 6 Plus has a set of two rear-facing 8MP cameras.

The idea there is that the sensors act in concert – this isn’t to produce fancy 3D pics, but to take high-quality regular shots. The combined effect of two 8MP sensors lets them gather a ton of light all at once, helping with shots in low-light environments. The camera software can also combine the data from these two sensors, merging it to create 13MP pics. Other claimed benefits include super-low autofocus times. It’s all a very unusual take on smartphone imaging, and we’re anxious to learn just how well it performs in real life.

Pricing starts at the equivalent of about $320 for the single-SIM Honor 6 Plus, with the dual-SIM version fetching more like $400. Pre-orders in China open as of tomorrow.
