Galaxy S 4 KitKat update “coming soon” to North America

Yesterday brought us the biggest break in a while concerning Samsung’s efforts to deliver an Android 4.4 KitKat update for last year’s Galaxy S 4. After not seeing the start of distribution in January, as had been foretold by a leaked document, yesterday delivered word that certain GS4 models in South Korea had their updates incoming. While that’s great news for those users, we’ve also been curious to learn how international availability might proceed. While firm dates still elude us, we do get a promising early update out of North America.

Canadian provider Rogers just updated its OS update notification page a few hours ago, where now both the Galaxy S 4 and the Galaxy Note 3 have their Android 4.4 updates listed as “coming soon.” We know, that’s pretty vague, but it’s still promising for other reasons: for instance, the GS4 variant getting the update in South Korea was the Snapdragon 800 edition, and this update has us hopeful that Samsung is at nearly the same stage in its preparations for GS4s running other SoCs.

And if Canada is getting its GS4 KitKat updates “soon,” you had better believe that a general international release is similarly right around the corner. Knowing US carriers like we do, we’re hesitant to suggest that the arrival could be quite so fast here, but for all parties involved, we’re looking at the home stretch by now.
