Google freshens up Wallet with UI tweaks, loyalty card scanning

Last year was a tumultuous one for Google Wallet, and more than once we wondered if Google might be giving up the good fight and shuttering the service after the ridiculous amount of push-back it saw from certain wireless carriers. Nevertheless, Wallet triumphed, and with the launch of Android 4.4 we saw the service mature into something no longer reliant on whatever entity control’s your phone’s secure element. Following all that work expanding Wallet’s reach, Google is now working to add a few new features, as we hear about with today’s Wallet update for Android.

Supporting store loyalty cards is one trick Wallet’s been pulling for a while now, but the update expands on this functionality to make it just a little more convenient, letting you add such cards to Wallet’s collection by scanning the relevant card barcode with your phone’s camera. This builds off last year’s ability to add new payment cards via camera.

Beyond that functional change, we also see Google spruce up the app’s appearance a bit, though it’s nothing drastic: a lighter color scheme for menus, and a sprinkling of icons to accompany text labels, helping with quick navigation at a glance.
