In case you didn’t previously notice (or cared that much), Google’s recent Pixelbook deal reminded us the high-end Chromebook’s top-of-the-line configuration never actually started selling. Not at the search giant’s US e-store, and not through any authorized retailers, although B&H Photo Video does accept pre-orders without listing a release date.
Well, the day a handful of people have been waiting for is finally here… sort of. Starting now, Chrome OS power users, wherever they may be hiding, can order this beautiful, potent but inherently restricted laptop with Intel Core i7 inside, as well as 16GB RAM, and a 512GB NVMe SSD.
The bad news is you shouldn’t hold your breath for speedy delivery. “Ships by January 3, 2018” is what the US Google Store promises at the time of publication. On the bright side, while you’d normally have to pay an exorbitant $1,649, an instant $100 discount brings that price down to… a still very extravagant $1,549.
You can also save at least $79 by receiving a Google Home smart speaker at no additional charge for a limited time without having to do anything aside from purchasing the two products together. The same exact combo is available at an identical $1,549 price point from B&H, but it remains unclear when third-party shipments are supposed to begin.
If you want to spend a
little lot less money, you can always go for Core i5-powered Pixelbook variants with 8GB RAM and either a 128 or 256GB SSD at $899 and $1,099 respectively, down from $999 and $1,199. Don’t worry, they can all twist and turn, thanks to 360-degree hinges.
